Tavira old town and castle
Cross the old bridge over the Gilão and climb to the castle, which is free to enter and looks out over the rooftops and the lagoon. Open 10:00 to 17:00 in winter, 10:00 to 19:00 in summer.

Cabanas island beach
Boats leave the Cabanas waterfront about every 15 minutes in season for a 5 minute crossing to the island, then a short boardwalk to a long sandy beach. About €1.50 return.

Boats cross to Tavira Island from the Quatro Águas pier, east of the town centre, to a long beach on the ocean side.

Beaches and the Ria Formosa
Praia do Barril and the anchor cemetery
Cross the footbridge at Pedras d’El Rei and walk 1.3 km through the dunes, or take the little train (€2 single, €4 return). Behind the beach, 203 anchors from the old tuna fishery lie in the sand where they were left in 1964.

Flamingos in the salt pans
Greater flamingos feed in the salt pans at Sítio do Pinheiro, where 162 bird species have been recorded. You can book a tour of the salt flats.

By boat from the Cabanas waterfront to Cabanas island, about every 15 minutes in season. The crossing takes about 5 minutes and a return costs about €1.50.
